It's Monday! What Are You Reading? 11/9/15

It's Monday! What are you reading? was started by Sheila at Book Journey and was adapted for children's books from picture books through YA by Jen of Teach Mentor Texts and Kellee of Unleashing Readers. You can visit either site for a round up of blogs sharing their weekly readings and thoughts or search Twitter for #IMWAYR. (Don't you love the updated logo?)

Last Week's Posts

  • Our Own OK Book. We read The OK Book by Amy Krouse Rosenthal and Tom Lichtenheld and created some of our own "OK" pages.

Picture Books

The OK Book (2007) by Amy Krouse Rosenthal and illustrated by Tom Lichtenheld. Last week's Global Read Aloud pick highlights the power of discovering your inner possibilities and figuring out how to leave your unique "mark" on the world. The kids enjoyed the humor and puns of the story, but we also had a solid discussion about what it means to leave your mark.

Young Fiction

Welcome to Silver Street Farm (2013) by Nicola Davies and illustrated by Katharine McEwen. This quick read of a book features a trio of friends who have had one singular desire since kindergarten ... to run their own farm! A variety of coincidences find them suddenly with the right space, the right animals, and a BIG problem. The resolution is too quick and too pat in my opinion but makes sense for this level of book. Kids will enjoy the characters and cheer them on. (A review copy of the book was provided by the Candlewick Best in Class mailing. All thoughts are my own.)

Happy Reading!

  1. Until I saw your post, I totally forgot that I read The OK Book last week too! Glad to hear your class had some conversation about it. I do enjoy the puns. I didn't realize Nicola Davies had written a book like this one--I only know her nonfiction, I think, as well as The Promise. Will have to look for this.

    1. Thanks! The kids had a blast with the OK book (and with AKR's puns in general).

This was one of my first Nicola Davies books, but I am interested in finding out more about her nonfiction too.

  2. Not really sure about how I feel about the Tom Lichtenheld titles, I tend to avoid titles that seem to be kind of self-help for kids? Silver Street Farm looks interesting. :)

    1. Oh my goodness, Tom Lichtenheld is hilarious. The OK Book does have a positive message, but it is actually deeply sarcastic. Some of my favorite books of his include E-Mergency (puns) and Duck! Rabbit!

  3. We absolutely love Amy Krouse Rosenthal's books - The OK Book is one of our "go to" books to read during PD sessions and in classrooms.

    1. Cool! My students definitely enjoyed thinking (both seriously and absurdly) about the things they are "OK" at.

  4. It sounds like your discussion of The OK Book was a good one. I will head to my library and find a copy of it. Thank you for sharing!

    1. Thanks, Ricki! It's a very clever device (turning the OK into a stick person) that catches kids' attention immediately.

  5. You have convinced me to get a copy of The OK Book. I would also like to check out Welcome to Silver Street Farm. These easy novels can be hit or miss I've discovered.
