Top 5 3rd Grade Book Recommendation Posts of 2016

The beginning of 2016 was my eighth year of teaching third grade (before I switched to teaching middle school). My third graders had a strong reading community and loved sharing books and recommendations with each other. In the spring, we used the "If you like ... read this next" format to share books with each other, and I published many of their reviews on The Logonauts. We also shared them using the hashtag #3rdfor3rd. The following are the top 5 most-viewed of those posts.

Books for the Summer

Book recommendation by Anand

If you are looking for the summer read Big Nate Great Minds Think Alike by Lincoln Pierce. It is a great graphic novel about a kid named Nate that goes to dentition a lot. He has friends named Francis (who is the smart kid) and Teddy ( who is a chill dude).

This graphic novel is really funny and there is really weird things in the book too.

If you are done with the book there are a lot of Big Nate books like Big Nate on a Roll,Big Nate in a Class by Himself, and Big Nate Dibs on This Chair.

So are you going to read this hilarious book?

Ella Enchanted

Book recommendation by Megan

Sometimes do you feel magical? Feel like when someone asks you to do something you always have to do it? Feel like you've been cursed with obedience?

Well, the book Ella Enchanted is just like you! In it a girl is cursed with the power of listening to everything she is told. It can be fun, like eating s'mores, but it can be very dangerous to. If someone told her to cut off her head; she would be forced to do it.

Life is good, but when she is sent off to school with two greedy girls who are ready to pounce on her gold and kill her, things change very quickly. Will she be able to survive or will she be killed in pain?

Flora and Ulysses

Book recommendation by Elsa

A hero can emerge from any place. And by any place, I mean any place at all. In Flora and Ulysses by Kate DiCamillo, one does.

It starts with a vacuum cleaner. I mean a Ulysses super-suction, multi-terrain 2000X. Because it is the most powerful vacuum in the world, the owner of it tries it outside.

Flora Belle Buckman, a natural- born cynic, is watching the whole thing from her window. The vacuum goes right in front of a squirrel, and, as you guessed, the squirrel was vacuumed up. Flora decides, the squirrel should live, and saves his life.

Flora smuggles the squirrel into her room. In the cover of the night the squirrel, now named Ulysses, sneaks into the kitchen, to steal... a bag of cheese puffs. On the way the he finds a type writer. And he starts typing.

After that it is obvious that Ulysses is a super-squirrel. Many adventures are in store for Ulysses, he just needs to find them. I recommend this book to any one one likes (or loves) animals and adventure.

#3rdfor3rd: The Family Fletcher

(Please note that my third graders read a wide variety of books across a wide variety of genres, levels, and topics. Do not think that these books are "only" for third graders.) The Family Fletcher

I have mentioned on the blog before that my third graders had the chance to Skype with author Dana Alison Levy as a part of World Read Aloud Day in February. To prepare, we began reading aloud her first book, The Misadventures of the Family Fletcher, which was a huge hit. SUCH a huge hit, in fact, that it featured in the teacher gift I received at the end of the year.

Amazing, right?

The sequel, The Family Fletcher Take Rock Island, came out on May 10th, and there was much clamoring for it among my students. Two of those that got a chance to read it before the year ended chose to write their "Best Book of the Year" reviews about it. Enjoy!

A book you should really read this summer!

A book recommendation by Grant

The Family Fletcher takes Rock Island is a great book by Dana Alison Levy. It has great adventure hilarious stories and great surprises. This book is the second book in a series of two the first book is The Misadventures of the Family Fletcher.

This is my favorite book because of its hilarious comedy.

Read The Family Fletcher!

Book recommendation by Wafik

You must read The Family Fletcher's Take Rock Island. It has been written by Dana Alison Levy . It is a really good book. It is even better than The Misadventures of the Family Fletcher.

The Phoenix of Destiny

Book recommendation by Oliver

If you like Geronimo Stilton you will like the Phoenix Of Destiny: an epic Kingdom of Fantasy adventure! I believe it is the twelvth book in the Kingdom Of Fantasy series. It is by Geronimo Stilton. It is over 500 pages long. I am only 90 pages in but it is already really good.

In the book Geronimo is sent on a mission in the kingdom of fantasy. It has a lot of fantastical creatures in it including fairies and dragons. Will he succeed on his mission or will he fail and die?

Read the book to find out!

This semester, my students are sharing book reviews in a different format, linking one book they thought many people in the class might have read and another that would appeal to a reader of the first book. (Please note that my third graders read a wide variety of books across a wide variety of genres, levels, and topics. Do not think that these books are "only" for third graders.)

You can find their posts here on their Tumblr page.

If You Like The Lightning Thief ...

By: Olivia

If you enjoy Percy Jackson ... then you'll enjoy the sequel series, the Heroes of Olympus.

The two book series have a lot in common, like they are both based on the Greek gods and Roman gods. They both have a little bit of violence and a little bit of sadness and a good amount of powerful words. They are both very mysterious adventure books, and they are amazing books and have a very good settings.

I hope that you enjoy reading this adventure with mystical creatures and ... read to find out more ...

If You Like The Lightning Thief ...

By: Ava

If you like The Lightning Thief series by Rick Riordan, then you should read The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick.

These books are adventurous, and exciting!

I recommend these books to readers who like mysteries and fantasy.

The Minecraft Combat Handbook

Book recommendation by Aakash

So The Minecraft Combat Handbook is a book where you learn the basics of becoming a warrior or a major prankster. The thing that I like about the book is that you can learn a lot of information about mobs (creatures) in Minecraft.

I would rate the book 100000000000000000000000000000 stars.

The book also includes potions that are helpful, my favorite potion is the potion of swiftness. My favorite mob is the Wither.

What is your favorite mob?!!

Trouble Magnet is a good book by Nancy Krulik. It is the second book in the George Brown, Class Clown series. It's about George Brown, who has this super-burp that makes him go crazy. He joins a band called the runny noses.

But in the middle of the band concert in the Edith B. Sugarman school talent show, he gets a super-burp. George goes crazy and plays on his toes. He even dive-bombs into the principal. Uh Oh, how will he get out of this one . . .

Other good books in the George Brown, Class Clown Series are:

Super Burb! (Book 1)

What's Black and White and Stinks All Over? (Book 4)

Attack of the Tighty Whities (Book 7)

And many more.

By: Evelyn

If you like Cleopatra in Space, then you should read The Courageous Princess series by Rod Espinosa.

Both book series have a princess in them that is not like a wussy princess but way more adventurous.

I would recommend these books to anyone who likes mysteries and is willing to read a book about a courageous princess!

If You Like Cleopatra in Space ...

If you like Cleopatra in Space, then you should read Bee and PuppyCat.

These are both really good series. Bee and PuppyCat is a comic, and it has a LOT of really cool stories in it! Here are the reasons I like it:

1: Lots of cute pictures

2: Really cool and adventurous

3: IN FULL COLOR!

4: It's just super awesome!

P.S. Book 3, The Secret of the Time Tablets just came out. In our classroom, kids are reading it three at-a-time!

If You Like the Guardians of Ga'Hoole ...

By: Nathaniel

If you like Guardians of Ga'Hoole, you should read The Land of Stories books.

Guardians of Ga'Hoole is a story about an owl named Soren and his gang of owls. This book is built off an owl legend of the great Ga'Hoole tree [or well they thought was a legend].

Guardians of Ga'Hoole is very similar to Land of Stories by Chris Colfer which is a book series with about 11 less books (which tells you that there's a lot of Guardians of Ga'Hoole books). As for the Land of Stories book series well, I got a video for that, please watch it!

I hope you enjoy! This is a link to the trailer for Land of Stories.

If You Like the Guardians of Ga'Hoole ...

By: Grant

If you like Guardians of Ga'Hoole, read Wolves of the Beyond next. Both series are about after the humans are extinct and Animals can talk. There are 15 books in the Guardians of Ga'Hoole and 6 in the Wolves of the Beyond series. Both series are by Kathryn Lasky.

Wolves of the Beyond:

I recommend these to people who like books that are not humorous but are serious.

If You Like Big Game ...

By: Chance

If you like Big Game by Stuart Gibbs, then you should read Evil Spy School (or any of the Spy School books) by Stuart Gibbs.

Big Game is the third book in the FunJungle series, which begins with Belly Up and then Poached. [Read my review of Belly Up here.]

The book Spy Camp by Stuart Gibbs is kinda' scary because at one part there is a guy somewhere and I'm not going to tell you what happens next. The first book (Spy School) is about a guy who goes to this school and then it is really a spy school. Some weird things happen in this book. But otherwise I think everybody should read these books. The third book is called Evil Spy School.

If You Like Diary of a Wimpy Kid ...

By: Brady

If you like the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series by Jeff Kinney, you should read The Brilliant World of Tom Gates series by Liz Pinchon. They both have great humor and it's like a diary, just like Diary Of A Wimpy Kid.

They both do not like their sibling(s). Another book you might like is the Big Nate series.

Rating: 1234567890000000% (So far.)

I love it so far. So you probably will too!

If You Like Diary of a Wimpy Kid ...

By: Seamus

If you like Diary of a Wimpy Kid, you should read the Stink Moody books by Megan McDonald

It is a funny book. Stink and his 3 friends Webster, So Fenian of the elves, and some times Judy Moody (his annoying sister) go on adventures.

Stink is a small kid and doesn't like any sports (besides thumb wrestling) he doesn't have a lot of muscles. Stink is a small and he some times gets in trouble with his friends.

So he's a wimpy kid just like Greg, but Greg has a brother not a sister.

If You Like Diary of a Wimpy Kid ...

By: Aydin

If you like Diary of a Wimpy Kid, you should read the Big Nate series by Lincoln Peirce. I recommend these books because they both have humor and there are comics so that is why I recommended these books!

If You Like Diary of a Wimpy Kid ...

By: Umber

If you like Diary of a Wimpy Kid, you should read My Life as a Book Series by Janet Tashjian.

Both series are hilarious and have the same kind of "journal" feeling. My Life as a Book and My Life as a Stunt Boy are in Katie's room. Unlike Diary of a Wimpy Kid, "My Life as a.." has chapters.

Enjoy!

If You Like Harry Potter 7 ...

By: Sadie

If you like Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, then you will love The Nest!

This well written book by Kenneth Oppel is about a boy (named Steve) who finds a nest in his back yard... Explore the secrets of The Nest and and uncover the secrets of Steve's backyard! Find out who is good and who is bad, who is telling the truth and who is pulling your leg, who is real and who is not!

On the back of this wonderful book it says:

I thought
it was just a dream
I thought
it had no power over me
"Fine"
I whispered

The Nest is just like Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in the scene that they both are mysteries that have that spooky creepy ghost story type of thing!

I would recommend this book to any one who likes mystery, bugs, ghost stories, or anything else along those lines!

If You Like Geronimo Stilton ...

My students are sharing book reviews with each other again, but this semester we are trying out a different format. Rather than a straight-forward book report, I asked them to think about two books that they liked, one they thought many people in the class might have read and another that would appeal to a reader of the first book.

This "If you like ... read this next ..." format was inspired by the We Need Diverse Books summer reading series. They used the format to encourage people to find and read diverse books, so all of their "read this next" choices highlight great, diverse book choices. You can find their posts here on their Tumblr page.

This was the example recommendation that I presented. Many of my third graders are obsessed with Geronimo Stilton, but many of them have not read some of the "older" book series in the classroom. (Read a student's review of Geronimo Stilton here.)

If You Like Geronimo Stilton ...

If you like the Geronimo Stilton books, you should read the Bunnicula series by James Howe. Both book series feature animals at the main characters, and both are funny and adventurous.

There are many books in the Bunnicula series.

There is also a second series called Tales from the House of Bunnicula. I recommend these books to anyone who likes fantasy, mystery, adventure, and humor!

#3rdfor3rd: The Story of Ferdinand

Welcome to #3rdfor3rd where I share books that my third graders recommend for other third graders. (Please note that my third graders read a wide variety of books across a wide variety of genres, levels, and topics. Do not think that these books are "only" for third graders.) Read more about this book recommendation series and format here.

The Story of Ferdinand

Book recommendation by Henry.

My book is called The Story of Ferdinand by Munro Leaf and illustrated by Robert Lawson.

I like this book because it is very funny and it has very colorful pictures and it is about a little bull that is smaller and weaker than the other bulls and he gets into something big that only the other bulls wanted because Ferdinand wasn't rough like them.

This book has a great subject and great illustrations. My favorite quote is when the mother says, "Why don't you run and but your head like the other bulls?"

This story is funny so whoever likes comedy will like this book. I give it five stars!
