  • Starfish is a wonderfully written novel in verse about a girl named Ellie who struggles with fat shaming. Throughout the book she learns to accept herself just the way she is. This book is amazing and would totally recommend.
  • A Season Most Unfair is about a girl named Tic, she learned the trade of candle making for her whole life, but replaced by a “proper” apprentice. She eventually comes to terms with this and finds a new trade that girl’s can learn. I loved this historical book about finding purpose no matter who you are.
  • The Other Boy is about a trans-masc boy named Shane, who struggles with telling his friends and baseball team about his past. And struggles with other’s opinions throughout the book, especially when his secret get leaked. Overall, I loved the book, topic, and little comics scattered through the book.
  • Sweep is a beautiful book about a girl named Nan. Nan was a climber raised by a kind sweep, but after his mysterious disappearance, she was bought by a cruel man named Mr. Crudd. Throughout the book, Nan will struggle with hiding her monster from the outside world. I loved the sad, yet happy ending.
  • Unstuck is a great book about a girl named Lyla, when she is assigned with writing a story for class she is very excited. She had been making a story in her head for years, but when it came to actually write it down, she feels stuck. Throughout the book, Lyla comes to peace with all the problems in her life and takes it one step at a time writing her story. I loved this book (and cover design) and all the helpful tips for anyone who needs to be unstuck.

Favorite Neurodiverse Middle Grade Stories

There are a ton of wonderful middle grade books coming out that feature neurodiverse characters. In an effort to share more books with my 5th graders, I've been creating bookmarks that feature six books on a single theme. You can download a full page of bookmarks here.

You can see the whole set of bookmark posts here: Book Recommendation Bookmarks. If you want recommendations from my fifth graders themselves, check out #iLoveMG for individual books and Best Book Lists for their end-of-year favorites.

Favorite Neurodiverse Middle Grade Stories

Get a Grip, Vivy Cohen! by Sarah Kapit. This engaging baseball story is written as a series of letters between Vivy, an autistic 11-year-old, and her professional baseball player pen pal. This book is a great fit for kids who love sports, endearing characters, and a big dose of determination!

Honestly Elliott by Gillian McDunn. (Student review by Marcus) This book is about a kid named Elliot who has ADHD and can’t concentrate on anything except cooking. When he gets his anger out by throwing baseballs at a window he has to face consequences! He has the money that he needs saved up but he wants to go to a cooking camp with that money! What will he do? When he gets a chance in school to sell stuff at a local marketplace he teams up with a unlikely friend to get enough money to pay his dad back and still be able to go to cooking camp.

BenBee and the Teacher Griefer by K. A. Holt. This novel-in-verse (and several other formats) features the point of view of four different students who are stuck in summer school. Their teacher helps them see their own strengths as they show her the benefits of video games! Perfect for all readers, as everyone can find a way to relate.

The Miscalculations of Lightning Girl by Stacey McAnulty. A lightning strike might have turned Lucy's brain into a super-genius at math, but it might not have prepared her for her greatest challenge... middle school! This is a highly entertaining book about embracing what makes us unique and celebrating friendship.

How to Make Friends with the Sea by Tanya Guererro. Moving to the Philippines has given Pablo even more things to fear, and his mother seems intent on adding to his list. But when his mother brings in Chiqui, an orphaned girl with a cleft lip, Pablo learns new ways to discover his courage.

Good Different by Meg Eden Kuyatt [a Schneider Family Book Award Honor]. Selah has relied on her rules for being normal in order to mask her own feelings and true self. But when an outburst at school exposes more than she intended, she has to learn how to love all of herself and help her school to love all of themselves too. The novel-in-verse format makes this book particularly emotional and accessible.

  • Keepers of the Lost Cities: Awesome book for anyone who likes: Fantasy, romance, and adventure. It’s a little sad at some points, there is a LITTLE bit of death in the series but overall I rate the book/ books series 10/10
  • Casey Grimes: Cool book, it starts with a family of 5 and they eventually travel to a forest of monsters. They live in Silvin woods, helping exterminate the monsters while building friendships. I recommend this book to anyone who likes fantasy books, and adventure. I rate this book 8.9/10
  • WARRIORS!!!!! Warriors is an amazing book, the series is huge and there are lots of other series just like it but with Pandas, Lions, Dogs and more! The Best Books Ever!

The Best Books Ever!

Recommended by Nathalie

  • Those Kids From Fawn Creek by Erin Entrada Kelly: This is such a good book. Once you start reading it you will not be able to put it down. Literally. I sat at my table and didn’t get up until I was finished. Lots of books by Erin Entrada Kelly are good but out of all of them this is my favorite.
  • Dress Coded and The First Rule of Climate Club by Carrie Firestone: These aren’t two books from a series, but they come one after the other and have the same characters. They are both about issues that need solving, but they are interesting and make you feel like you are one of the people in the book campaigning to make the world a better place. Read this book!
  • City Spies by James Ponti: This series is AMAZING. It is about a family of spies, and it is so sweet but will also keep you hooked. There are so many twists and turns, you have to keep reading because otherwise you will only be able to think about what will come next. You have to read this!
  • Keeper of the Lost Cities by Shannon Messenger: This series is so good. It isn’t very realistic, but reading at least the first book is necessary.
  • Trials of Apollo by Rick Riordan: This is a great series, and it follows Apollo as a mortal through the U.S. You should read the Percy Jackson series and the Heroes of Olympus first, but after that make sure to read this.

5 Books to Read This Summer

Recommended by Ezra

  • A Rover’s Story by Jasmine Warga A Rover’s Story is a realistic fiction book that takes place on Mars. It is told from the perspective of the fictional rover Resilience, who learns through the plot of the story. I would recommend it mainly for realistic fiction readers.
  • The Ogress and the Orphans by Kelly Barnhill The Ogress and the Orphans is in the genre of fantasy. It has a very lyrical tone and is told from the perspective of the narrator. I would recommend it for people who enjoy reading fantasy and realistic fiction.
  • Restart by Gordon Korman Restart is an amazing book told in multiple perspectives. It is about a boy who loses his memory to amnesia. But as he starts to gain his memories again, he realizes that he wants to change his personality. It is a great book for readers who like to read realistic fiction novels.
  • Mixed Up by Gordon Korman is told in multiple perspectives and is one of my favorite books of all time. It is told in the perspectives of two ordinary people who don’t know each other. One day, though, they start losing their memories and gaining the other person’s. I would recommend it for realistic fiction readers.
  • The Superteacher Project by Gordon Korman is a great book told in multiple perspectives. One day in Oliver Zahn’s school, there is a new teacher. Quickly, though, the students start to realize that he knows—almost everything. How could that be? This is a great novel for people who like reading mysteries.

Sugar and Spite is a good book about to kids that one has more money and is mean to the other kid so does something with potion and end up having a bad luck until her dog save her from keeping that bad luck.

Super Boba Cafe is an interesting book about a rumble that keeps happening under the city and they have to fix it.

Percy Jackson (The Lightning Thief) is a great book about a teenager that has to find Zeus’s Master Bolt and stop a war between the gods.

Where the Mountain Meets the Moon is a good book about a kid named Minli going to try and bring fortune to her family.

Masterminds is a book where they are in a peaceful town but something is suspicious so they do something about it. There are 3 books in the series.

[A note from Katie: both Sugar and Spite and Super Boba Cafe were all-class read alouds where we were able to do Zoom visits with the authors afterwards. It's been so rewarding to see how often those two books appear on these end-of-year favorite lists. Author visits make such a difference!]
