New for August, the Diverse Children's Books linkup has added a suggested theme. For August 6th, the theme is Diverse Books for Back to School. To that end, I'd like to share a great first day of school story featuring a positive message about diversity and being true to yourself. See also Diverse First Days of School: Everybody Cooks Rice.

Suki's Kimono
Suki's Kimono by Chieri Uegaki and illustrated by Stephane Jorisch.
This is a great first day of school book because the action actually takes place on Suki's first day of school. It is her first day of first grade, and Suki is determined to wear her new blue kimono to school, despite her older sisters' protests. Suki learns the value in being yourself and in not being afraid to tell your story.

My son is starting 1st grade, so we'll look for this book at the library. So many first day books are about kindergarten, and he finds them too babyish now. Haha.
ReplyDeleteHa ha. They grow up so fast, don't they! :)
DeleteLove that book! #diversekidlit
ReplyDeleteThanks, Svenja!
DeleteI love that Suki possesses so much self-confidence.
