#SOL17 Weekend Routines 11/31

2017 is the tenth year of the Slice of Life Story Challenge hosted by Two Writing Teachers, The goal is to write and post a "slice of life" story every day during the month of March. My seventh graders are also participating in a slimmed down version of the challenge, writing 10 slices during the month.

Slice of Life: Weekend Routines

The alarm clock has claws.

I shift in my sleep, and she pounces. Flips onto her back and bats at my toesies. Groggily, I freeze. She waits. Then sees her own paws and decides a bath is necessary.

Her brother is sound asleep on the other side of my foot. He rolls into his back and sticks a paw in the air. Usually he's snoring.

Scott sits up and reaches for her exposed white belly. She pulls in like a roly-poly bug, wraps her paws around his arm, and starts licking fiercely. Everybody needs a bath this morning.

She pulls one finger away from the closed fist, licking furiously and trying to corral it into her mouth. (She likes to gently chew on fingers.)  Scott laughs between the weird sensation of cat mouth lick-bites and tiny paws pulling in his arm.

Big brother turns again, her attention is diverted, and Scott is free.

She's still on her back, trying to push with her back feet to scoot across closer to big brother. Her paws wave an inch or two below his neck, and he sits up and regards her.

We wait.

They wait.

Then a paw darts out and taps her on the head. She pushes off, launching herself across my foot and around his neck. Game on.

Their attention diverted, I rescue my feet from the end of the bed. Time to make the coffee while Scott gets up to start buttermilk biscuits ...

Temporary peace achieved on the guest bed

  1. My daughter's cat is my alarm clock as well! Those darn critters. He starts the routine at an extremely early 4am! Your words paint a very realistic routine in my mind.

  3. Aw, that's so cute! What a fun way to wake up. ;-) We don't have cats, but we have a dog that sleeps with us. Fortunately, he sleeps as late as we want to sleep. I've always been grateful for that! :-)

  4. I love all of the sensory images in your slice today! I have a puggle that thinks she's an alarm clock too.
