Sumo Joe review #ReadYourWorld

This Friday is the 7th annual Multicultural Children's Book Day! This incredible event is a day-long celebration of children's literature. Check back here on January 31st at The Logonauts for the GIANT link up with hundreds of book reviews of high-quality inclusive literature.

Sumo Joe

As a longtime co-host, I received a gift copy of Sumo Joe from author Mia Wenjen to review. All thoughts are my own.

Sumo Joe is the debut picture book from Multicultural Children's Book Day co-founder, Mia Wenjen. The book is a poetic celebration of Sumo, Aikido, and the power of siblings.

My Review of Sumo Joe

Sumo Joe is a cute day-in-the-life story about Jo and her older brother, who she affectionately calls "Sumo Joe." After Jo goes to Aikido, her brother and his friends create their own sumo ring in the living room, practice their moves, and get ready to face off. But when Jo comes home and demands to join in, the boys have to decision to make ...

The book is lively and a quick read, with brief 3-line poems for each page. You might want to practice a few times before reading aloud, however, as a few of the lines are quite a twist to the tongue. (I have yet to master "Hands on knees / leg raised slow" in tempo.) Though geared towards the young end of school-aged children, my toddler has been requesting this one a lot since it arrived. He is especially fond of yelling "Kiyah!" at the end.

In addition to the story, Mia provides an author's note about sumo, as well as a two-page glossary of terms and illustrations about sumo and aikido. For kids interested in martial arts or learning more about Japanese-American culture, there is a lot of information in the backmatter.
